Second Scholarship and 2019 Phase Two
On May 30th, we awarded our second Character In Life Scholarship to Melissa Borrayo Garcia at Puyallup High School. Melissa will be attending Washington State University and working towards becoming a Spanish teacher at the secondary level. While not required for the award, Melissa demonstrated her love for teaching during her time in the Puyallup HS Teaching Academy. We hope she will consider returning to the Puyallup area when she completes her time at WSU.
The excitement of awarding our first two scholarships led to the excitement of trying to continue this into the future. We have worked hard and secured funding to award two more scholarships in 2019. The next step is to add two more scholarships for 2019. We know that this isn't going to be easy but all of us believe in the work. We believe in helping students achieve their dreams. At this point, we are 30% towards our Phase Two goal. Without a doubt, we are committed to making this a reality.
Adding a scholarship for Rogers High School is an investment in our community. Rogers is the 3rd comprehensive high school in the Puyallup School District and offering a scholarship there in 2019 would be a huge step forward for us.
The 4th scholarship for 2019...this one is special in a different way. A Gold Star Kid is the son or daughter of a member of the United States armed forces that died in service to the nation during any period of war or hostility. While we know that our scholarship will never replace or make up for the loss of their mother or father, we want to help them pursue the dreams. This first Gold Star Kid Scholarship will be available to one graduating senior from Pierce County (WA) in the Class of 2019. This will be a huge challenge for us in trying to reach each high school in Pierce County as well as selecting one applicant. No matter how difficult it is, it is worth it.
If you know someone that would be interested in helping us meet these goals, let us know. If you know a business that would like to support our efforts, let us know. It is amazing how much a small group of committed people can accomplish.
